I saw this BBC blog entry, and I thought it was very thoughtful. I am posting about it for my conservative readers who feel their opposition to Obama had been mischaracterized.
Yes, there are the crazies. The ones who overtly oppose Obama because he’s not white, those who fervently believe he is a secret Muslim, or that he was not born in the US. But they do not make up the majority of McCain voters. The majority of those voters, Matthew Price argues, are those who see Obama’s policies (not his person) as a threat to their perceptions of American identity.
This is about the people who simply feel his policies, and his approach would not be good for this nation. This is why John McCain’s focus on “Barack the Redistributor” has hit a chord with many segments of the population here…That is because – for millions here – Barack Obama is not what they think of when they think of an American. For many I have met, he’s simply too “European”.
However I may disagree with what I see as a distortion of Obama’s policies in calling it “socialist”, I can say that I do respect the views of those who believe Obama’s tax policies (which are standard liberal tax policies) will not help our country. It is a valid and legitimate concern. I won’t go into why I disagree in this post, because I simply wanted to highlight the claim that Price makes. That most McCain voters are fairly rational human beings, and even if they haven’t studied the issues, they’re at least not crazy people. Hooray for dignity!
